Every time I visit France I fall more in love with Spain

Posted by Ben UK - Barcelona on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, In : Spain
I moved to Spain in 2010 and since moving to Spain I have been a Freelance working in Export Consultation and working for a one way van hire company that operates between the UK and Spain. My job consists of generally one of the following: A customer who has hired a van to drive from the UK – Barcelona would drop the van off at my house then I would clean and check the van over and a few days later a customer would come and collect the van to take it back to the UK. Sometimes when a custome...

A few pounds while you are looking for a job

Posted by Ben UK - Barcelona on Saturday, December 31, 2011, In : Spain
I moved to Spain from the UK in 2011 because my wife got a job teaching at an international school in Barcelona. I have found finding a job difficult because most of the jobs I can see available for people who cannot speak Spanish are call centre jobs that I think I would find soul destroying. What I did to keep some money coming in until I was able to find my feet was to complete online surveys about my shopping habits and what sort of films I like to watch and normally I receive about 2 pou...

Get a job first

Posted by Diane UK - Barcelona on Saturday, December 31, 2011, In : Spain
I moved to Spain from Liverpool in August 2011 and have found the move very easy because I had a job to go to. I have heard many horror stories of people selling everything to move to Spain assuming there will be plenty of opportunities when they arrive but most of the time this does not work out as planned. If you move to Spain with a job then they will help you with all the paperwork and you can find accommodation easier if you have an employment contract and then you can just get on with e...

Why I Hate Spain

Posted by Nick UK - Spain on Thursday, December 1, 2011, In : Spain

I Hate Spain

Maybe hate is too strong a word but ok then I dislike Spain, I’ve had enough, get me out of here – whatever your choice, the end result if the same. I’m leaving Spain to go back to the UK.

I’m not the only one who now hates Spain. It’s a bit like the thin line between love and hate. I moved to Spain four years ago to start a new life and at first I loved it but now I hate Spain and can’t wait to get out. There are lots of downsides to living in Spain and I just didn...

Language Software

Posted by Ben UK - Barcelona on Monday, October 3, 2011, In : Spain

Before I moved to Spain I tried many ways to help improve my Spanish before moving to Barcelona I even purchased learn Spanish while you sleep CDs that you are meant to have playing all night, but what I found worked the best not including private tutors were the following computer programs. First is Rosetta Stone this software helps you to learn the way you would as a child by taking vocabulary and then building on it. For example it starts with a picture of a man and says hombre then shows ...

Bank Frustration

Posted by David UK - Alicante on Monday, October 3, 2011, In : Spain

I have lived in Spain now for 6 months and I love the way of live, but I have found some things very frustrating and that is mainly the banks. The banks only seem to be open between 8.30am and 2pm Monday to Friday this is annoying because this is the period when I am at work. Then I was waiting 4 weeks for my card to arrive eventually I had to go into the bank and chase them twice before it came. Once it came I had to phone up and get it activated this I can understand for security purposes b...

I have lived between Spain and the UK for many years and this year decided to make the full time jump to retirement and live in Spain full time. A language Boost

Posted by Ben UK - Barcelona on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, In : Spain

When I moved to Barcelona in 2010 the first thing that I needed to get to grips with the language. Catalonia is hard any way because the first language of the area is Catalan so I needed to make sure that I could work out the difference and not learn any bad habits when trying to learn Spanish. I enrolled on a 2 week intensive course that was 4 hours per day 5 days per week plus about 2 hours worth of home work that needed to be completed every evening. This gave me a fantastic boost and gave...

Moving to Barcelona

Posted by Louisa England - Barcelona on Saturday, September 24, 2011, In : Spain

I have wanted to move abroad since I stayed in Tennessee for six months during university. After not particularly enjoying my job in the UK I decided to take the leap and applied to some agencies specialising in teaching jobs abroad. I got the job in April 2010. I knew that I needed to feel secure and also make sure that the school was where I wanted to be.  I booked a flight over in May with the intention of visiting the school and finding out as much as possible about the area I would be li...
