Driving – Be careful when you come home.

Several people I know have shared this experience. When you first drive on the right you concentrate and you are very careful and soon it becomes second nature. When you then travel back to the UK you think you don't have to worry as you have driven in the UK for years. Wrong! Be careful. I have several friends who have driven on the wrong side of the road in the UK. Tends to scare the horses.

Be careful about continually making comparisons. I have heard people who have complained about plumbing, food, driving, tea, opening hours are a few examples. These people find it difficult to settle into the new culture. It's different. It's not wrong.

Language Fun

Keep trying with the language. You will make mistakes, and some of them will be amusing. We have several examples from our time in Italy. A friend of ours thought she was asking here baby sitter if she would like a glass of lemonade. She actually asked her if she would like a French-kiss! Another friend tried to buy a small stainless steel lamb. On another occasion my wife asked for beans and cream.

Several years ago, when we first moved to Italy, I was keen to test my Italian. I wanted to buy a pair of insulating silk liners for my motorbike gloves. I was convinced that I could ask the question without a problem. I went to the motorbike dealers in Pisa and asked the question. When I got a very puzzled look from the girl behind the counter I decided to reach for my dictionary. To my surprise I thought I had asked for gloves of pure silk. I had actually asked for gloves of pure sex.
